| The Power of the Birthday Poem
Poetry as a means of telling a story or sending a
message is as old as language itself. Cultures all around the globe have rich
traditions of spoken and written verse used as part of rituals and celebrations.

A word on Copyright.
ALWAYS acknowledge the author of the poem.
Why all the fuss? A little law called copyright firstly,
and secondly your credibility.
How so?
Imagine if your friend thinks you said it and then later finds out that
you borrowed it. Get the picture?? You want them to be thrilled on the
upside.

Your Own Poem
Poems are very powerful! They represent the essence of a
heart, a mind and the feeling of an individual. Wow, all that in one small set
of verses. Yep and that's why they are so powerful. They can deliver complex
thoughts, emotions, issues that people struggle with and human kind has for
years.
If there is a poet's heart beating in your breast I have
just one thing to say: Go for it!
A word to the wise....
Keep it short and to the point. Let it be part of the
celebration -- an important part -- but DO NOT let it turn into tale to rival
the Viking Sagas of yester year. Ode to a Birthday Poem -- no thanks!

- Short and sweet is a treat!

An alternative sits somewhere between OPP --
Other People's Poems and YOP -- Your Own Poem.
Ready, here it comes.
Use the verse of another but overlay your own words. This
can be especially helpful for little people who are learning through Nursery
Rhymes and simple verse. Even for older folk, relaying your thoughts through a
familiar verse has huge impact. Providing the words and sentiment are clear it is a fun
way to harness the power of the poem.
Best Birthday SUGGESTION:
OPP - Choose wisely and make it fit with other elements. Always, always, always,
acknowledge the source.
YOP - be succinct and make sure it reads
well. Package it with other elements and make a keepsake of it.

The Birthday Poem may be may need some raising
from the dead in some peoples eyes, but in the right hands it has the potential
to disarm, devastate and totally WOW the birthday person.
